Overview
What are your time commitments?

Most volunteer areas require a regularly scheduled, weekly, four hour shift. For volunteers 18 and older, a 100 hour annual commitment is required.

How old must I be?

Our program provides volunteer opportunities for ages 18 and up.

What is the process to begin volunteering?

Application: Complete the online application form (see “Apply Now” button on homepage) or call 541.677.4465 to request an application be mailed to you.

Interview: Volunteer Services will contact you to go over your application once it has been received. The purpose of this interview is to help us become acquainted and, if accepted, determine your volunteer placement/schedule.

Orientation: Following the interview, if a placement has been determined, we will direct you to our online orientation packet. Our orientation covers the policies and procedures of CHI Mercy Health and the Volunteer Services Department.

Security Clearance: Each applicant is required to have a background check completed. While there is no cost to you, a social security number is required. The Background Search Authorization Form will be filled out during the orientation process.

TB Skin Test: A TB skin test will be scheduled upon completion of your application and orientation. The TB skin test requires that you come in to our Employee Health Nurse to get the first dosage. You must return 48-72 hours afterwards to have the TB results read. You then wait one week, and come back in for the second dosage. If you fail to return for your readings, you will be required to repeat  the TB test.

ID Badge/Uniform: Each volunteer is provided a badge to be worn each time they volunteer. After the orientation paperwork and TB skin tests are complete, and there is confirmation of the completed security clearance, applicants will be scheduled to meet with  Volunteer Services. Final paperwork will be reviewed, a mini tour of the hospital conducted and you will receive your ID badge.

Training: As a new volunteer, you will work alongside a veteran volunteer until you feel confident in your specific duties. There are certain departments that also require extra training from their staff, and will require that you be trained by them as well.

How long does the application process take?

Depending on your desired assignment and how quickly you get the orientation packet back and the background checks and TB tests can be administered; the process can take between 4-6 weeks.

What is the dress code?

Volunteers must adhere to the CHI Mercy Health dress code. The dress code is explained in detail in the orientation material.

Can I volunteer just for the summer?

Sorry, we do not have summer-only opportunities.

How long do you keep applications on file?

Once applications have been received, they are kept on file for three months from the date received. If you applied to volunteer more than three months ago, you will need to reapply.

What volunteer shifts are available?

The majority of our volunteer stations have four hour shifts beginning at 8 a.m., noon, and four.

Are there night and weekend shifts available?

Yes, there are limited volunteer opportunities available between the hours of 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. weekends.

Where can I park?

Once you have been accepted as a volunteer and begin your shift, parking is available in any lot during that shift. We do ask that you please use spaces further from the entrances, leaving the closer ones for our patients and guests.

Are meals provided to volunteers?

One free meal, or beverage from our espresso shop, is allowed on the day(s) you volunteer. Meal provisions are explained in detail at orientation.

I need to fulfill community service hours. Can I do them through Mercy Medical Center? What about court-ordered community service hours?

We do not allow community service or court-ordered service hours to be fulfilled by volunteering at CHI Mercy Health.

I would like to find employment at Mercy Medical Center. Does volunteering guarantee me a job?

We do not recommend volunteering in an attempt to secure employment at this facility. Volunteering does not guarantee or open doors to part-time or full-time employment. For information on employment, visit Jobs on the website.

Can I volunteer for a total of only 10-15 hours?

We ask our volunteers to commit to a regularly scheduled weekly shift for six months. This longer-term opportunity provides consistency which benefits both the volunteers and the patient/staff that they serve.

Can I begin volunteering tomorrow?

Volunteering in a healthcare environment requires several necessary steps before you can begin. Please refer to the volunteer application process for details. This process can take between four and six weeks before you are ready to begin volunteering.

Can I volunteer in more than one area?

Yes, but we ask you to commit to your assigned area for at least one month and then contact Volunteer Services to talk about the possibility of adding an additional shift in another area.

Can I volunteer more than one day per week?

Yes, if your availability allows it and there are opportunities available for multiple shifts.

Who can I contact for more questions?

You can contact the Volunteer Services office at 541.677.4465 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why should I volunteer?
