How to pick and store watermelon

One of our favorite tips for picking the best watermelon is to look for the field spot. The field spot is a large spot on the watermelon that indicates where the watermelon rested on the field as it grew. The sweetest watermelon will have a field spot that is orange or yellow. Make sure the watermelon is also firm, heavy for its size and has well-defined stripes. Place unsliced watermelon on a countertop away from direct sunlight for up to one week. Once sliced, tightly wrap the slices and place them in your refrigerator for up to a few days. You can also freeze watermelon.
